What do I need to know about the restricted zone in Dubrovnik, Croatia?

There is a restricted zone in Dubrovnik, Croatia, around the Old Town, and you are not allowed to drive into it with your roadsurfer. Entry is monitored by cameras that automatically read your licence plate, and driving in without authorisation will result in a fine.

The zone is officially called the Zona posebnog prometnog režima (Zone under a special traffic regime).

Where is the zone?

The zone covers the protected historic centre of Dubrovnik and the surrounding buffer zone — the districts of Grad, Pile–Kono and Ploče.

It runs from Ilijina glavica, via Zagrebačka ulica to Viktorija, and via Pile to Boninovo. All entrances are marked with signs, traffic lights and warning displays.

When does it apply?

The zone is in force every year from 1 March to 30 November. The City of Dubrovnik can also activate it outside this period — for example on public holidays, during events, when cruise ships arrive, or when parking is full.

Can I get permission to drive in?

No. Access is only possible with a pass (propusnica), and these are issued to residents, property owners and tradespeople with a private garage or a secured parking space inside the zone.

A roadsurfer camper does not qualify for a pass, and there is no public parking inside the zone suitable for a camper. Please plan your visit on the basis that the zone is closed to you.

What happens if I drive in?

Cameras at the entrances record your licence plate automatically. There is no barrier and no toll booth, so you may not realise anything has happened until the fine reaches us.

Fines are issued to the vehicle, which means they are invoiced to roadsurfer as the rental company. As set out in our Terms and Conditions and your rental agreement, such fines are then transferred to you as the driver.

Please be mindful that fines for this zone can range from a few hundred to over a thousand euros, depending on the circumstances.

How do I avoid a fine?

  • Do not drive towards the Old Town. Treat the whole historic centre as closed to your camper.
  • Do not rely on your navigation app. Satnavs and map apps routinely route straight through the zone. Follow the road signs instead.
  • Park outside the zone and continue on foot, by bus or by taxi.
  • Check the official information before you travel on the City of Dubrovnik website.
