Where needed?
In France tolls are charged for most highways.
In addition, in some cities an environmental sticker, the so-called "Crit'Air Vignette", is mandatory for foreign vehicles. Everything in detail about Crit Air here: France: When do I need an environmental sticker for my Roadsurfer?
Toll-free roads:
- city bypasses of Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseille
- some routes in Alsace/Lorraine, Auvergne and Brittany
How to pay?
The toll charges can be paid cash or by credit card at most of the toll stations.
Alternatively, the electronic toll collection (ETC) system called Liber-t can be used for paying the toll charges. Therefor an on-board unit is needed which will be installed at the windshield. The toll is recognized automatically and charged to the account connected to the unit. With this you can use the lane exclusively for Liber-t-users at the toll gates which allows you to pass quick and easy.
Some toll highways in France are fully electronical without toll booths using the free-flow system. At those tollgates no cash payment is possible. Payment is done online via a self-serving website or through the ETC. To pay online you need to register the license plate on this website. If the vehicle is not registered in advance and driven through the toll gate the license plate will be scanned and payment can be done online up to 72 hours subsequently.
NOTE: If the toll is not paid, the invoice will be sent to roadsurfer and you will then be charged including penalties and fees.
