What do I need to know about tolls in Austria?

Where needed?

In Austria tolls are charged using vignette for driving on highways and expressways as well as tunnels and mountain crossings.

You can check if the car already has a toll vignette here (external link). If not, you can buy it directly from the website once you pick up your roadsurfer.

How to pay?

Tunnels and mountain crossings can be paid cash or by credit card at most of the toll stations.

The toll charges for the roads are paid by the vignette which can be purchased online or at common points of sale like border crossings and gas stations and will be registered to the license plate number of the vehicle. The vignette can be purchased with a validity period of 1 day (only online), 10 days, 2 months and 1 year.

INFO: 1-day and 10-day vignettes are valid immediately when purchased online, 2-month and annual vignettes are valid from the 18th day after online purchase at the earliest.

Special tolls (additional costs per trip):

  • A13 Brenner motorway
  • A10 Tauern motorway
  • S16 Arlberg tunnel
  • A11 Karawanken motorway - southbound
  • A9 Pyhrn motoroway

For the following routes no vignette is necessary:

  • A1 Westautobahn (border crossing Walserberg to Salzburg-Nord), Land Salzburg
  • A12 Inntalautobahn (border crossing Kiefersfelden to Kufstein-Süd), Tyrol
  • A14 (border crossing Hörbranz to Hohenems), Vorarlberg
  • A7 (Mühlkreis freeway, new Danube bridge in Linz - still under construction), Upper Austria
  • A26 (Linz Westring - still under construction), Upper Austria

NOTE: If the toll is not paid, the bill will be sent to roadsurfer and then charged to you including penalties and fees.

Can I find out the registration number of my camper in advance?
