What do I need to know about tolls in the UK?

Where needed?

In the UK tolls are charged for the M6 motorway near Birmingham and for Dartford crossing on the M25 motorways as well as for certain bridges and tunnels and for driving in central London and Durham city center.

Toll routes:

  • M6 - West Midlands
  • M25 - Dartford River Crossing
  • A4 - Batheaston Bridge
  • A15 - Humber Bridge
  • A19 - Tyne Tunnels
  • A38 - Tamar Bridge
  • A41 - Mersey Tunnels - Queensway
  • A59 - Mersey Tunnels - Kingsway
  • A57 - Dunham Bridge
  • A3025 - Itchen Bridge
  • A533 - Mersey Gateway Bridge
  • A533 - Silver Jubilee Bridge

How to pay?

At most bridges and tunnels you can pay your tolls at the toll booths in cash, by credit card or via an electronical toll tag.

  • For the M6 motorway no cash payment is possible. You can only pay by card or through an electronical tag.
  • The M25 Dartford crossing and the Mersey gateway bridge do not have toll booths for cash payments and the payments have to be done by midnight the day after crossing. For the M25 Dartford crossing toll payments can be done online, at the payzone (LINK) stores, by post or by phone. Between 10pm and 6am the crossing is free of charge. For the Mersey gateway bridge toll payment can be done online, through the Mersey Flow Quick Pay App, the Mersey flow’s walk-in-center, by phone or at the payzone stores.
  • In London and Durham congestion charges are collected for driving in specific areas and are charged by day. For London you can prepay or pay by midnight of the day of travel online or by Autopay. For Durham payment can be done via phone in advance or by 6pm on the day of travel.

NOTE: If the toll is not paid, the bill will be sent to roadsurfer and then charged to you including penalties and fees.

LEZ, ULEZ and CAZ

Some cities have low emission zones. Our cars are marked as particularly low-emission and are therefore allowed to drive in the low emission zone, but – depending on where you pick up – you have to register.
