What is AdBlue / DEF and why do I need to refill it?

Where do you rent your roadsurfer?

Europe

All diesel vehicles require the additive AdBlue to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

Before you pick up your vehicle, we check whether the AdBlue tank (separate from the diesel tank) has been filled by the previous driver. This ensures that you start with a full tank.

The range varies depending on the vehicle model, route and driving style.

If the AdBlue tank is empty on the road and at the end of your trip, you are responsible for filling it up, because AdBlue is one of your motorhome's operating fluids, just like diesel or windscreen washer fluid.

When this symbol appears on the display, you must refill (it looks different depending on the vehicle model):

You still have about 1,000 km of range when the warning appears. If you do not refill, the engine will not start again if the AdBlue is completely empty!

AdBlue refill

AdBlue can be easily refilled at almost any petrol station. Many petrol stations have AdBlue pumps that make it easy to refill accurately. Otherwise, AdBlue is sold in cans. To make your return journey easier, we have selected a petrol station with AdBlue refill option* at our stations. You can find the address of the AdBlue refill option here. If you prefer, you are sure to find other options near your station.

Be careful when refilling, as AdBlue can irritate the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. It is also corrosive to metals, paints and plastics. Therefore, if anything goes wrong, clean your hands and the vehicle with plenty of water.

North America

Only our Diesel-fueled Horizon Hopper needs the additive DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

Before you pick up your vehicle, we check whether the DEF tank provided for this purpose (separate from the diesel tank) was filled by the previous tenant, so that you can start your trip with a full tank.

The range varies depending on the vehicle model, route and driving style.

If the DEF tank runs empty on the road and at the very end of your journey, you are responsible for filling it up, because DEF is one of the operating fluids of your campervan, just like diesel or wiper fluid.

When this symbol appears in the display, you must refill (it looks different depending on the vehicle model):

You still have about 1,000 km of range when the warning appears. If you do not refill it in time, the engine will not start again when the DEF is completely empty!

Refilling DEF

DEF can be easily refilled at a petrol station/truck stop or at Walmart or Target. Some petrol stations have DEF pumps that facilitate precise refilling. If not, DEF is sold in canisters - even in supermarkets. To make your return easier, we've picked out a petrol station with a DEF refill option* for you at our stations. You can find the address for the DEF refill option here. Alternatively, you are sure to find other options near your station.

Please be careful when refilling, as DEF can be irritating to eyes, skin and respiratory tract. It is also corrosive to metals, paints and plastics. So if something should go wrong, please clean your hands and your roadsurfer with plenty of water.
