This article contains all the important information about gas supply in your roadsurfer – including cylinder types, gas types, refill options and country-specific features.
The procedure is different, depending on where you rent your camper:
Your van includes a gas bottle that’s ready to use when your rental begins. We provide a gas bottle with some gas to get you started, but a full bottle cannot be guaranteed.
If you are traveling for an extended period or expect to use a lot of gas, you are responsible for obtaining and paying for additional gas when the bottle runs out—just as you would with fuel.
Please note that only a few European countries allow you to refill gas bottles; in most cases, you will need to exchange the empty bottle for a full one.
When returning the vehicle, please ensure that the gas bottle is included, but it does not need to be full. If the gas bottle is missing, we will need to charge you a fee for the bottle deposit.
Refill gas bottles within Germany
Gas bottles in Germany are normed. They are usually not refilled but switched at hardware stores (OBI, Hagebaumarkt, Bauhaus...) or gas supply shops. That applies to both 11kg steel bottles (Propane) and 2,75kg Campinggaz (Butane). Check here for specific locations for each kind:

Different countries, different systems
Things get a bit more complex when we look at gas supply across Europe. There are different cylinders and connection systems locally.
- If you are travelling in Europe with a van rented in Germany and the gas is empty, it is best to contact a local gas supplier. They can refill or replace the cylinder according to local regulations. You may need one of the four EU adapters to fill or connect a local cylinder. To be on the safe side, you can also buy the EU adapter set in a camping accessories shop before you leave:
- If you have rented your van in another of our European locations, the locally used EU adapter and a local gas bottle will be in use. However, if you now leave this country, it may also be necessary to buy an adapter and a local gas bottle.
Gas supply in Europe:
If your van uses the 2.75 kg Campingaz bottle, dealers can be found in most European countries.
For the 11-kg steel bottles: Check with local campsites where you can fill/exchange gas bottles. Some sell gas bottles directly. Adapters can usually be purchased at hardware stores or from gas suppliers. Below you will find specific information on 11 kg steel cylinders per country.
We have compiled the best possible information for you here, but cannot guarantee its accuracy, as this may vary from region to region. Thank you for your understanding!

You receive your roadsurfer with a full propane tank (if it has one 😉).
When you run out of propane gas, you can easily refill it at any gas station with propane gas provider. The access to the gas tank is next to living-area door, on the bottom. You will recognize it when you see a yellow screw cap.
You can find the nearest to you here. Some RV parks and Campgrounds may also provide this service.
Important!
Never fill up the gas tank yourself, have a professional at the gas station do it.
Also make sure to return your roadsurfer with a filled up propane tank. Otherwise we have to charge you a fee to refill it.
