What do I need to know about tolls and LEZ/ZBE in Spain?

Toll

  • In Spain, there are numerous toll highways (Autopistas de Peaje), especially along the Mediterranean coast, around Madrid, and in the north.
  • The toll is usually paid at barriers. You can pay in cash, by credit card, or with an electronic transponder (Via-T).
  • The amount of the toll depends on the route, vehicle type, and season. For our campers and motorhomes, the same rates as for cars apply, as the permissible total weight does not exceed 3.5 t.
  • Toll-free alternatives: Many former toll routes are now free of charge, e.g., parts of the AP-7 and AP-2.
  • Tip: Check in advance for toll routes on your journey, e.g., on the website autopistas.com or with Google Maps, for example.

NOTE: If the toll is not paid, the invoice will be sent to roadsurfer and then charged to you including penalties and fees.

Low Emission Zones (LEZ/ZBE)

  • Since 2024, there have been environmental zones (Zonas de Bajas Emisiones = ZBE) in 149 Spanish cities, including all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga, Bilbao, Alicante, Granada, Salamanca, Córdoba, and Seville.
  • An environmental sticker (Distintivo Ambiental) is required to enter these zones. This is only available for vehicles registered in Spain, which does not apply to the roadsurfer fleet.
  • In most cities, foreign environmental stickers (e.g., Crit’Air from France, German green fine dust sticker) are also accepted. Madrid and Barcelona are exceptions.
  • Vehicles with foreign license plates must register online in advance to be allowed to enter the LEZ of Madrid and Barcelona. Registration can take 20 or 15 days. For short-term trips in Barcelona, there are daily permits (max. 24 per year).
  • The zones are well signposted. Fines are imposed for violations, so watch out for this sign if you are not registered:

LEZ Registration

Madrid

  • The entire city area is an LEZ/ZBE. Check via Google Maps whether you need to register even on highways – unfortunately, we have no information on this.
  • Request the license plate and registration certificate ZB1 with the emission class 20 days before departure via the Contact section.
  • Unfortunately, there is still no online registration. Register by sending your contact details, license plate, registration certificate, and your travel dates by email to: zbedistritocentro@madrid.es

Barcelona

  • The highways B10 & B20 are excluded from this.
  • Nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays are also excluded. If you enter the city on weekdays (Mon-Fri) from 7 am to 8 pm, registration is mandatory. Here you will find all the information well summarized.
  • Request the license plate (and for long-term stays the registration certificate ZB1) 15 days before departure via the Contact section
  • You can register here: https://zberegistre.ambmobilitat.cat/en/VehiclesEstrangers
  • Choose between a longer stay and up to 24 one-day stays. Decide based on the fees which option suits you best.

Can I find out the registration number of my camper in advance?
