How to pay?
You can pay cash at the toll stations. Most common credit cards and bank cards (Maestro or V PAY symbol) are often accepted as well.
The tolls can also be paid by Viacard, a prepaid card exclusively for toll payments in Italy. It is available at rest stops and Punto blu stations. You can use up to three Viacards for one payment at the toll booth. If you run out of credit on your Viacard you will receive a receipt to pay at the next counter by cash or card.
INFO: The four stations on the A18 between Messina and Catania (Roccalumera, Taormina, Giardini di Naxos and Fiumefreddo) do not accept Viacard as payment.
Another method to use is a toll box, also called Telepass. For using this method, you need to order the toll box prior to the trip, connect it to your account and install it at the windshield. The toll will be recognized automatically by scanning the license plate when entering and exiting a toll zone and then charged to your account. With the toll box you can use the yellow lanes at the toll stations exclusively to pass quick and easy.
The toll box can also be used to pay the fairy Villa San Giovanni to Messina as well as for many car parks. Furthermore, it can be used for toll payments in France, Spain and Portugal and for large motorhomes in Austria. For using this method ordering of the device and online registration is required prior to the trip.
NOTE: If you want to use your toll box/Telepass with your roadsurfer van, you must remember to cancel the license plate after your return. Otherwise, you will be charged for the tolls of the subsequent renter!
On the new freeways A36, A59 and A60 there is only an electronic payment system so called free flow system. The license plate is scanned when entering and exiting a toll route. Payment can be done by various options like entering the vehicle registration number online, by using the "Pedemontana Lombarda" app or with the toll box.
NOTE: If the toll is not paid, the bill will be sent to roadsurfer and then charged to you including penalties and fees.
