🔌 Charging the camping battery / Electricity - Road House (Weinsberg CaraTour 540)

You can charge the camping battery while driving or connect the van to an external power source. To do this, you must connect the supplied cable (20 metres long) from the plug at the back on the driver's side of the camper to a power source. Please note that campers cannot be charged at the stations for electric vehicles.

Please note the following:

  • Do not forget to unplug the power cable before driving off! To unplug, push down the blue lever to the left of the plug. The lever is visible under the cover when it's opened.
  • With a fully charged battery, you will be self-sufficient for about 2 days without electricity. Then you have to drive again for some time to recharge the battery or connect your camper to an external power source.

You can check the battery charge level in the on-board computer. Click on the on/off button at the top right of the on-board computer. Then press the battery symbols on the left side of the on-board computer.

The top battery symbol indicates the level of the camping battery and the bottom battery symbol indicates the level of the car battery.

When pressed, the battery level lights up on the scale. When the battery is low the colour of the light is yellow or red. The battery works sufficiently when the light is marked above level 2/3 and higher.

Troubleshooting

If you have problems with the power in the living area, please check:

  • Whether the on-board computer is switched on. If not, switch on the unit above the door. A green light indicates that it is switched on.
  • Please note that the 230V sockets can only be used if they are connected to an external power supply! Without an external power supply, only 12V (USB and 12V sockets, lighting) can be used.

Not connected to external power

  • Check the battery level of the camping battery (upper battery icon on the on-board computer on the left side).
  • If there is no power at all, check the big red fuse of the camping battery. This is located in the boot area to the left behind the wooden cover.

Before any fuse is pulled, following safety measures is required:

  1. Turn off the engine and remove the key from the contact.
  2. Unplug the car from any external power supply.
  3. Pull carefully on the fuse by pulling from the sides.
  4. A damaged fuse can be burnt or have the connector broken (see picture). If so, please replace it. You can find them at petrol stations and hardware stores.

When connected to external power

  • The vehicle indicates that the battery is charging by illuminating a light at the bottom left of the on-board computer:
  • If the lights of the on-board computer don't turn on, check the RCDs. They are located under the wooden cover found under the mattress next to the toilet wall - inside the white plastic box.All RCD fuses need to be flipped towards you to be working. The little windows needs to show red.
  • You can also check the battery charging booster, when you experience trouble charging the camping battery. When the green light is on, external power is connected. The button needs to be pushed in for the device to work.
  • If everything is OK, check if the cable or socket at the other end (which is plugged in at the campsite) is faulty. Maybe a nice fellow camper will let you check with his cable and working socket? 😍

For deeply discharged camping batteries

As camping batteries are not lithium batteries, we advise you never to discharge them below 30%. This can damage the battery. If you suspect that the camping battery is deeply discharged, try the following:

  • Connect shore power and run the engine.
  • Try this for about 30 minutes. The extra amperage can bring a deeply discharged battery back up to speed.
