Everything about payload

The rules differ, depending on where you rent:

Europe

The basis for campervan weight is:

  • A class 3/B driving licence allows you to drive vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes.
  • Our campers are therefore also authorised for up to 3.5 tonnes.

What is included in the vehicle weight?

As the weight is very difficult to estimate, we have calculated it for you as follows. The vehicle weight results from:

  • Manufacturer's specification (mass in running order)
  • Full fuel tank
  • 75kg driver
  • Filled gas bottle(s)
    • blue Campingaz bottle: 6kg
    • large steel bottle: 21kg
  • our Roadsurfer equipment (40kg in total)
    • Camping chairs: 9.2kg
    • camping table: 5.8kg
    • kitchen box: 7kg
    • Other enclosed equipment: 18kg

How much can you load?

We now subtract this vehicle weight from the 3.5 T and thus obtain the remaining load capacity for your fellow travellers, luggage, bicycles, fresh water / waste water and you, if you are heavier than 75 kg. 🤭

Please also note:

  • Don't underestimate the weight of the fresh water and waste water tanks! We recommend travelling with only approx. 20 litres of fresh water.
  • If you are worried about being overloaded, in many places you can go to your local waste disposal company to check the scales before you start your road trip. ❤️
  • Some of our Castle campervans are approved for 3 people for weight reasons, but they have 4 seat belts. If you keep an eye on the maximum load capacity (see table above) and do not exceed it, you can easily go travelling with four people.
North America

Here the weight does not play a big role, as the EU-weight limit of 3,5 tonnes does not apply.

In North America the limit for the total weight of a car is 26,000 pounds (around 11.8 tonnes). Thus you may drive our campers above 3.5 tonnes with your regular driving licence, too.

You should still not drive with a completely full water tank or excess weight, as that has influence on fuel consumption. ;)
